Malteser Pie Recipe #bakingclub

Obviously, if you are making Malteser Pies for a house of 50 teenage boys you are going to need large quantities, so we made 6 times the recipe, but you are welcome to make less.

INGREDIENTS

* 450g Maltesers plus extra for decorating
* 110g unsalted butter, melted
* 100g caster sugar
* 4 egg yolks
* 200g of dark chocolate
* 500 ml whole milk
* 3 tbsp Ovaltine powder
* 300ml double cream
* 1tsp vanilla extract

LET'S GET COOKING...

  1. First, smash up all the Maltesers with a rolling pin.

    If you run out of rolling pins, a tonic bottle works well ;-)

  2. Add to the crumbs to a bowl with the melted butter and mix.
  3. Press into a greased 26 cm pie tin and push down evenly with a spatula or the back of a spoon until the bottom and sides are completely covered.

  4. Leave in the fridge to set whilst you make the filling.
  5. Smash up the chocolate.
  6. Separate the eggs.
  7. In a medium pan, add the egg yolks, milk and Ovaltine powder, then whisk over a low heat until thickened.

    You can drink any leftover milk
  8. Take off the heat and stir through the chocolate until it’s a smooth, silky consistency.
  9. Remove the pie shell from the fridge and pour the chocolate filling in.
  10. Place back into the fridge. Preferably overnight if you don't have boys waiting for their supper!
  11. Just before serving whip the double cream and vanilla together until stiff.
  12. Spoon over the chocolate filling, evenly covering the surface.
  13. Smash up a few more Maltesers and sprinkle them over the top.
  14. Congratulations!! You have Malteser pie. Now do a little celebration dance...
