Trip to see MK Dons

'Theatre of Dreams' - Stadium MK
On the journey, everyone was thrilled and perhaps scared due to the imagination of Akinfenwa’s destruction. It was rather an amusing trip with Mr Davies’ company.

We arrived just in time to the theatre of dreams, where all the stars rise and away challengers suffer. The quality was better than Wembley stadium but the size was about a tenth of it. The crowd was 40% full and cheering for the big win. The players were massive especially Daniel Powell. However, it was nowhere near Akinfenwa who was by far the strongest man on the pitch. Unfortunately, he did not play but everyone was excited that they were able to see him in real life.

The first was disappointing from both sides. However, after a poor first period, the Gills began the second half brightly.
Myles Weston's shot was pushed out by David Martin and from the rebound Cody McDonald found Fagan, who swept the ball into the far corner.
The closest the Dons came to an equalizer was when Dean Bowditch's shot was headed away by Leon Legge. The match ended 0-1 for the underdogs but pure domination was shown as the Dons had 63% possession, 14 shots (to 4), and 12 corners (to 2).

The supporters from Bedford could not hide their tears, especially Nihat, who was secretly crying in the McDonalds’ toilet.

Culture Evening

We decided to have a 10 minutes of culture slot on Monday evening where Dom.B played his commended piece from the senior piano prizes and Ali and Assan each gave 5 minutes of their recent school lectures on modern Art. The only problem was that 10 minutes quickly became well over an hour!
More than twenty boys from all years stayed to debate with Ali and Assan about their opinions. The level of discussion and understanding was an inspiration and it was fantastic to see so many boys getting passionately involved.
Hopefully this will be the first of many such an events. A night to be proud of in the house!

Charity Run

This Thursday is the school charity run. Each house is running for charities that they have chosen to support, and we are no exception. The men of Talbot's have chosen to support Barnardo's because they want to support young people who have not been as privileged as they have with life chances and Cancer Research UK because of they way some members of our community have been touched by cancer. The group has decided to run an average of 7 laps each of the school cross country course, totalling a target of about 120 laps. The overall target will be completely confirmed tomorrow evening since there may also be some token laps from the matrons!
The lads would very much value any support you are willing to give by donating to the charities. The links to the just giving page for each charity are below:

As it stands, the team comprises:
Ben.N, Dom.K, Philip, Jack, Justus, Duncan, Rio, Assan, Rufus, Alex, Mike, Karan, Tom, Josh, Leo, Mr Gracie and Mr Rees.

Many thanks,

Mr Gracie

Ben's London Marathon

We are really proud that our head of house Ben is going to run the London Marathon this year. See a message from him about how you can support him and why he is doing it below:

"Hello and thank you for your time and interest. I will participate in the Virgin Money London Marathon this year and raise money for the charity "The Outward Bound Trust". The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity dedicated to unlocking the potential in disadvantaged young people through discovery and adventure in the wild.
I was inspired to take on this challenge about a year ago watching the 2013 London Marathon on TV. I thought running for a charity was generally a good idea and so I decided to raise money and awareness for The Outward Bound Trust. I would consider myself very lucky to have enjoyed great education throughout my life and I want to help others that are not so lucky get the same opportunities.
I will aim to run the 42,195 km in under 4 hours at an average speed of circa 5:30 minutes per km."

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

French Play

Benno has written the article below about the recent French play at school. One of the things we love in the house is when boys go and support each other as they have done here:

On the 13th of March, some men of Talbot’s went to the theatre to support their fellow chap Michael.
He took part in the performance of Molière’s Dom Juan by the French Society. The group consisting of girls from Bedford Girls School and boys from Bedford School had an ambitious aim: the whole play was in French! However, in the hope of catering for a wide range of spectators, they also provided an English translation.

The acting skills were beyond doubt very impressive and well practiced. But that was nothing compared to the skill in French shown on this occasion. Almost without mistake, fluent with no pauses to think and most of the time a barely audible English schoolboy accent, these French students showed truly superb French skills.

Overall, it was a very successful performance; it might have even inspired some other French students to take part in next year’s French Play should there be one….

Paintball Write Up

Justus has given another excellent writeup for this year's paintball trip below:

Last Sunday the Mighty Talbot's House went on a trip to Luton for a friendly paintball match. After the arrival and the safety instructions, even teams where chosen. Team White was lead by Mr. Rees and Team Orange by the legendary Mr. Gracie. Enthusiastic players like Rufus and Jack showed some great effort in winning each round. The game was set up in 4 different rounds. After 2 even matches the Orange team, took the  upper hand and won the last two rounds. After an overall even set of games the Orange team won and had both MVPs of the day, the earlier mentioned Rufus and Jack. To finish of the day and to decide the winner of all boys, a legendary and epic match of Hunger Games was hosted, where everyone played against everyone. A few alliances were formed between the boys but that did not stop one of the MVPs of the 4 games played before and also the winner of the Annual Hunger Games 2014, Jack

Friday Celebration 7/3/14

Wow! When you sit down to write up the Friday celebration, one really realises how much happens in the week in the house.

There were some excellent highlights on the academic front as Ali.B introduced the speaker at this week's Gilbert Lloyd Art lecture and Assan then gave his own lecture about the 'merits' (sarcastic in this lecture) of Modern Art. Bob and Jun were both selected for the y10 Maths Challenge team. Duncan gave us feedback on the World Book day event too.

On the Music front, Dom.B gave a very impressive performance in the A2 Music performance exam on Tuesday night.

In this week's Merit competition the top dogs were Alex.G and Tom.C who both earned 5 in one week.

They were followed by:

3 merits: Simon, Ben.K, Bob, Jonny and Benson
2 Merits: Mike, Benno, Alikhan, Adrian.H and Teepee
1 Merit: Duncan, Kritt, Bobby, Fuga, Dom.K, Rio, Ali.B, Karan, Ben.N, Dylan and Max

In sport this week, Karan helped the house senior squash team to the plate final which is to be played next week. Tom.C was the fastest in the entire 5th form for the school road run this term whilst Teepee made the semi finals of the 60m (in a PB time) and the Long Jump at the national indoors. He is now ranked 7th nationally in both events.

In teams this week we have:

Football: 1st: Nico, 2nd: James.L, Rio, 3rd: Rufus, Leo, 16A: Fuga, Alex.S,
Hockey: 1st: Ben.N, Tom.C, 3rd: Jack, Dylan, 16A: Josh, 15A: Ben.K
Sevens: U16: Josh

The winning pancake team from Tuesday received their applause and Bob was congratulated for cooking Korean donuts for everyone's supper on Wednesday.

The best award this week went to the men who took responsibility for tidying the kitchen earlier this week. Mars Bars all round for those heroes.

The Top Bloke was awarded to Simon who stepped up to score the winning penalty for his team last weekend in the dying seconds of the match.

Man of the Week went to Assan for his excellent achievement in giving a school lecture about something he is passionate about.

Friday Celebration 28/2/14

First of all, a huge apology to all those who featured in Friday Celebrations before half term. There were many and they have gone unmentioned on here due to their housemaster's incompetence. However, what can one do but get right back to how things should be?

This Friday saw us all back together after half term with much to celebrate as ever. One thing not celebrated due to the lads not mentioning it was the success of our lads in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. We had a huge number of certificates including gold for Bob and Jun who was also the highest mark in the school! Sasha was awarded an A* in his RE block test which gave him particular personal delight whilst there were many merits as ever. The double merit winners were: Simon, Duncan, Fuga, Ben.K and Michael whilst Tom.C picked up 3. However marching on goes Alex.G whose 4 merits keep him in the top 5 merit winners in the school this term!

We had a number of entrants on the prestigious Detweiler Art competition, but I'll leave that to a later post coming soon....

In Sport this week, Benson continues to be an integral part of the badminton team's unbeaten season. 3 more matches lads... Alex.S and Duncan did a fine job representing St Peter's in house squash this week whilst the following were selected for school teams this weekend:
Football: U15B: Bob, Simon, U15A: Nihat, U16A: Fuga and Alex.S, 3rd: Rufus and Aaron, 2nd: James.L, Leo and Rio and 1st: Nico
Hockey: U14D: Frank, U15A: Ben, U16A: Josh, 3rd: Jack and Dylan, 1st: Ben.N and Tom.C
Rowing: J15C: Alikhan, 1st VIII: Mik
Water Polo: Senior: Sergey, Maxim, Philip, Junior: Charlie, Jonny

The best thing to report on this week was the instances of fantastic kindness and helpfulness from the following: Simon, Hodges, Ben.K, Alex.S, Mike, Alex.G and Ben.N

This week's Top Bloke was awarded by the options to Josh for his fantastic blog post about the Ice Skating whilst the Man of the Week was Dom.B who broke the school overhead squat record and received the new man of the week prize, the Golden Stag!

Well Done everyone!

TWR Tutor Group Meal

Jun has written a very personal account of Mr Rees' tutor group meal at Red Hot Buffet:

Mik can't stay away from the weights!
On the Thursday night before the end of the half term, our tutor group went to Red hot buffet in Milton Keynes. My expectation about the buffet was quite low, because on the menu on the internet, the Yorkshire pudding was on the Mexican food list. However, when I arrived at the buffet, it was quite different to what I expected.
There was a grill section, seafood section, Chinese section, Indian section, dessert section and there was no Yorkshire pudding in the Mexican food section! I started to eat sushi first, there were 8 different sushi dishes. After having some sushi, I went to have some curry. There were 4 different curries, but I only tried chicken tikka. After having my curry I tried some Chinese dishes. They weren’t good as the Chinese food that I’ve tried, but they were still tasty. After having some food, I stayed sitting on my seat!
Next to me Alex was having his burger from the grill section and in front of me Nico and Josh were having a competition of the number of dishes that they had. After sitting down for a while I went to the dessert section. In the dessert section, there was a chocolate fountain with marshmallows and fruits next to it; there was a cake section with various cakes like tiramisu and mango mousse cake. However, I didn’t have any of that. I had an ice cream, which was more like a gelato. II don’t really remember its name, but it had chocolate chip, mint syrup, chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. It was not amazing, but worth trying, if you like ice cream!
On the table, the competition between Nico and Josh was still in progress. The score was 10:9 and Nico was wining by one plate. Then, Josh intimidated Nico by bringing one more plate, so Nico brought another plate. Josh then gave up, which resulted in Nico’s victory. After coming back from the Red hot buffet, I went on the red hot buffet website and I will recommend to people that the picture on website is quite a lot different to the real restaurant!
