New Boy's Dictionary

If you're new to Talbots, welcome!!

As with any community of people who live closely together, Talbots house has evolved a vocabulary that might sound strange to some. Here are some key words/phrases that you might come across and what they mean:


25 side - The side of the house nearest to town, where Mr & Mrs Rees live

27 side - The side of the house closest to the park, where Mr & Mrs Gracie live

Assistant House Master - The tutor who lives in the house and helps the housemaster. It is currently Mr Rees

Barn - The big room where boys enter the house with the pool and table tennis tables in it

Boot Room - The big room near the garden exit where you can keep muddy shoes, outdoor coats and sports equipment

Drills - Tasks set to serve the house, usually as a consequence of not fulfilling responsibilities as a member of Talbot's

Duties - Areas of the house you are given to look after for a set time period

House Master - The person with overall charge of the house and your care whilst in Talbot's. It is currently Mr Gracie.

JCR - What used to be the 'Junior Common Room' which is now the house computer room.

Matron - The amazing ladies who make you tea, listen to your concerns, do your laundry and look after the house during the day.

Options - Senior boys in the house who help keep it running smoothly and who are good to talk to when you are worried or have a question.

SCR - The senior common room. A quieter sitting room where you can read, do some work, play games or practise the piano.

Tutor - The person who you see each morning and is in charge of helping you make the most f your academic and other opportunities whilst at Bedford.


Don't worry if you forget, it's always fine to ask. If you come across any other words/phrases you don't know, let us know so we can add them to help future boys who are trying to settle in.
