Amazing OB Visit - Allinghams

MRG, Jim, Robyn, Ted and Will
On Tuesday last week we had an incredible visit from two OB's of the house. This was not your ordinary visit however as we were lucky enough to receive the Allingham brothers, Jim and Robin who were in the house from 1947-1950 and the early 1950s respectively. The connection came as Robin is the great uncle of Will. It was fantastic for the boys to hear about how different the experiences in the house of our guests were in some ways but equally how they had much in common. Of particular interest was the timelessness of the barn which was the hub of the social life of the house in the 1940's just as it is now. It was also interesting to hear how the hatch to the kitchen had been opened up in the early 1950s which would seem to be a great idea. Jim was also able to help us make a note for the archive about Tony Jordan who was his head of house in 1947 and Morton who is the head of house that started the Talbot's head of house handover book which we still have in the archive and has been revived. The boys showing our guests around also managed to find an old house photo in the house books which had Robin in it.
Jim told us how the senior boys would have a sidetable to sit at in the barn and there was a table tennis table squeezed in that one couldn't move about behind. They also recalled that what is now the 25 side of the house was, in fact, a girl's boarding house before it was purchased and made part of our house. The current crop of Talbot's men obviously lamented that! It seemed that the element of community and depth of friendship gained were similar in the 1940s to what they are now and that the routines of the house underpinned everything, also as with now. Something that was definitely much different was the food. Our two guests were in the house when rationing was very much still part of life and their recounting of green fish and slices of beef hearts were not something we hoped may return to the house and school life.
Such visits remind us all how lucky we are to be in a community with fine traditions and strong values and it was our absolute privilege to share part of our day with two such amazing men. The boys who showed them around were, as ever, fantastic and their stories were hugely valuable to us.

Friday Celebration 3/11

We hope you all had an enjoyable half-term break.  This first week back has been an eventful one for the young men of Talbots.

On Tuesday, we had a fun night with some Halloween activities.  The props cupboard for house plays came in useful as 7 boys dressed up to trick-or-treat at Mr Hinkins house to surprise his children.   We also had a brain & skull cake and had a great fire in the evening.

Immediately prior to Friday celebration, more than half the house was out at the Bedford Blues fireworks & funfair where they met friends and enjoyed an evening of festivities.  Another group went out for dinner with returning house legend Simon Cheung OB!

On Thursday Marcus and Ben played wonderfully in the bass concert.  This was especially significant as it was Marcus' first concert at school.

U15A -- Will; U15B -- Henry T. and Divine
U16C -- Simon and Alikhan; U16B -- Dan; U16A -- Andrew

Friday Celebration 8/9/17

Well, the first Friday Celebration of 2017-18 has come!

Its been a manic week and the 4 days we've been back feels like about 3 weeks with all the new information, great new additions to the house community and activities happening.
This week saw sports hall on Wednesday and a fire in the house on Thursday with a BBQ accompanying tonight's celebration.

In tonight's celebration we praised Divine for results in his LAMDA exam and Ben.W for his efforts with the national youth choir.
Stephen, Adrian and Ben.W were selected for the 1st orchestra which is a big achievement.
In the first matches of the term we have the following:
U15B - Henry, U15A - Will, U16C - SImon, Moritz, Alikhan, Brady and Ruslan with Dan in the B side and Andy the A's.
In the Seniors Leo and Evgenii run out for the 5th team with Sasha.P in the 3rds and George in the 1st team for a second season. A special mention must go to Simon, Moritz and Evgenii who don the Bedford School eagle for the first time.

In merits this week the following all gained 1 before the meeting: Kabi, Alex, Seb, Orlando, Michael, Divine, Jo, Henry, Ben, Curtis, Stephen, Adrian, Frank, juston, George, John and Leo.

This week's king of merits though was Dell who gained 2!

The options chose Kabi as top bloke this week for a number of noted bouts of friendliness and being kind as a new member of the house.

Our man of the week is Niklas who gained the distinguished honour of an academic stripe in assembly today.

Below are some photos from this week's activities:

Friday Celebration 21/4/17

It's been a short week but there is much to celebrate, especially the fact it is barbeque season again; this week's celebration night was around the BBQs in the garden!

Firstly, there were some excellent reports last term and in amongst those George, Leo, Sasha.P and David gained a personal best for their effort scores. There will be a pizza night for all those with an average indicating an excellent level of effort next week.

On a similar vein, the fourth form was the best merit per person earners in the school last term and so went out for dinner to celebrate yesterday.

In music, Ben.W was part of the national youth choir training events in the Easter holidays and Harry G was invited to the senior level of it too.

In sport this weekend, Lennart and Arthur are part of the J16 crew that ahs been invited to represent the East region in a national event on Saturday.

There is also the Basher rowing event which includes Brady in the J15C boat

George is playing for Northampton Saints U17 at Leicester

In cricket,  Dan plays for the U15A and Kighty and Sports are in the 2nds.

Whilst we are on the sporting note, a huge shout out to Tom Crowson (OB 2016) who played for England Hockey U21 against Austria last weekend.

This weeks merit competition goes from the last announcement of merits at the house Quiz:

1: Jason, Ruslan, Tizian, Stephen, Dan, Oscar, Leo, Harun, Ben.K, hodges, Szeets
2: David, Dan, Ben.W, Luca, Nik, J.Lo
3: Brady, Kostya, Edwin, Lennart
4: Divine
5: Henry

A special mention goes to Divine who has gained an award for 75 merits this year and Jason who is stranded on 99!

This week's man of the week for adding to his national youth choir exploits with not one but two distinctions at grade seven for singing and the piano is Ben.W!

House Quiz

Last night was the traditional Talbots House Quiz night. Rounds included questions about the school (What was Philpotts previous name?); questions about the house (How many rooms are named after a previous House Master?) and some less fiercely contested rounds about sports, history, science, music and more.

It was a great night with some rather vocal performances of some of the answers for the music round and some hotly argued scoring (you had to spell each answer correctly to receive the points).

It was a really well put together quiz and we are grateful for the huge amount of work that the lower sixth had put into creating it for us.

We also had an unexpected visitor, as old boy Jonas, turned up to say hello and hand out some of the prizes for the evening.

The winning team was Alex's with Duncan's team in second and Harun's team third place. Obviously the staff team probably smashed them all, but we withdrew from the competition entry, largely because chocolate prizes don't seem to hold the same value once you reach the grand old age of 21+

We also handed out our prizes for the term, with some fantastic efforts for the King of Merits title. In joint third place we had Kostya and Henry with 17 merits.

In second place it was Andrew with 22 merits.

But in joint first, with an incredible 38 merits each it was Jason and Divine.

Speaking of Divine, he also won our Man of the Term prize not just for his continued attitude of getting involved with everything, performing well in all areas, but for doing so with an air of humility and approach-ability that  embodies everything we want to see in boys as they grow through the house. His commitment to bettering himself, without making others feel less is something special that we really wanted to honour.

We also gave out two sets of house colours last night, for boys who have been consistently exhibiting the character qualities we love throughout their time in the house. The first set went to Adrian in the lower sixth. Adrian is someone who draws others in and makes them feel included. He's a man who younger boys consistently tell us feels like a 'safe' person to talk to if they are unsure or need help with anything. His nurturing qualities and ability to make others look to him for guidance is something we wanted to celebrate.

The second set of colours went to Matthew. Matthew has been with us since the fourth form and over that time his contributions to the house have been too many to count in terms of the number of competitions he has represented us in, the number of competitions he has gone to support others in, the number of football matches and games he has organised in the back garden, and his cheeky smile that changes the atmosphere of a room into a place where others can experience relaxed fun. These are definitely character qualities that we want to set as an example to others and we are proud to see him finally wearing his colours tie.

Friday Night Celebration 24/2/17

Breaking from the Domino's tradition we had burger king take away last night to celebrate the end of another great week. It marked the end of the exam season for our upper sixth, so we celebrated with a champagne breakfast in house to mark their return to lessons today.

In Hockey Matches today we have Kighty and Gabe in the first team, Reidy in the U15A's and Divine playing in the U14C's.

In football Leo is playing for the seconds and the third team might as well be renamed Talbots as we have both Sasha's, Simon, Hodges, J Lo, Nihat and John all playing in one team!

In the merit competition this week we had:
Duncan, Ruslan, Leo, Curtis, Brady, Lennart, and Reidy with 1 merit; Jason and Niklas with 3 merits; but the King of Merits was Divine with four merits and a commendation!!

It wasn't possibly to choose a man of the week this week, because it was a so thoroughly deserved three way tie with Harun, Niklas and Simon having maintained a perfect unbeaten record in the Basketball league this season.

Anybody else looking forward to the Super bowl? We certainly are and will be watching it in house for the 5th and 6th form this week; but before that we've got some great fixtures to watch in school this weekend too.

In hockey we will have Jo playing for the under 14D's, Divine in the C's and Reidy in the under 15A's. Gabe and Kight will be playing for the 1st team. Alvin and Adrian will be playing as the first pair in Badminton and in Football we have John and Leo in the 2nds, Khasis, Hodges, Nihat and Sasha P playing for the 3rds and Stephen in the under 16Bs. Lennart and Arthur will be representing us at rowing. If you're local and able to get down to any of these events we'd love to see you there,  I'm sure there will be plenty of the house cheering them on from the side lines too.

This week Harry and Ben both performed in music prizes and Jason made it to 75 (no, that is not a typo) merits!! Absolutely amazing achievements, as were the mock results in the fifth form. Plenty to be proud of, not least of Lennart and Igor achieving 5 A*s each!

Speaking of Merits, this week the King of Merits was Tizian (with four) with Arthur, Leo, Harun and Kighty taking joint second and fourth places.

Our man of the week was Ben for pushing himself to enter two music prizes and coming 3rd in both.

Tomorrow we will be taking over @Bedfordschool_UK's Instagram Stories to show you what the life of a house master at Bedford looks like, so make sure you check it out, and keep an eye on our @talbotshouse account too, for an epic baking club special. Pemberley have been giving us spice on twitter about a bake off. We're pretty sure they won't rise to the challenge, but we're planning something special anyway.

Friday Celebration and start of term update 13/1/17

Its been a really good start to term with boys getting straight down to business. its great seeing them arrive back refreshed and raring to go. Even those going into exams have ahd a smile on their face and the atmosphere around them has been productive. Today also saw the arrival of snow whilst we were in boarders singing but unfortunately most of the cover was gone by the end of the school day.

During this week Jo did a fantastic job filming the play 'Topcat' at the theatre which had a special appearance from two of our chairs! On Thursday Ben.W played the piano terrifically in the music scholars concert. Ben,Gabe and Dan.R all played cup hockey games with Dan putting in an excellent performance in the U15 victory according to Mr Herring. The basketball team won by a mere 82-18 which included Nik's debut for the team as well as Harun and Simon. Ben.k also has a call up to play his 3rd game for Northampton Saints in the U18 league this weekend.
Alex.S also had his first medical interview today which we are sure he nailed. The big academic news this week though was that Harry and Luke were awarded offers to go to Cambridge - massive achievements!
