Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

What a whirlwind of a term!! This year has flown by so far, and it only seems like yesterday we were welcoming 17 new members to the house, and yet here we are saying goodbye for the Christmas holidays.

We've packed so much into the last four months and we hope you'll enjoy this short summary:

Friday Celebration 9/12/16

This week is just about the hardest in the whole year. We have the tiredness of being at the end of the longest term but none of the fun Christmas events to break things up and school activities still in full swing.



It is true to form for this remarkable group in the house that, whilst the rest of the school seem to be on their knees, are upping their game with record hauls of merits, practices for the house play and some amazing helpful actions happening.

The 4ths and Removes have earned themselves a pizza night for averaging at least 3 merits each in a week and the 5th form were only 2 away!


In Water Polo this week, Igor and Sasha.K played in an ever improving U18 team whilst Harun, Simon and John.C were part of the squad for the Basketball U18 fixture. Henry.T acquitted himself excellently in the U14 house matches too.


Academically, we have seen our second commendation from Ben.W to go with the one earned by Jo last week.


The 5th team played on the first team Rugby pitch this week too and John, Frank, leo, Matthew and Sasha.P were involved in the 12-12 draw with Oundle.


In teams for the final games of this term are:

Man of the week is Arron, who not only took a lead role in the play but has been working so hard this term that one of his teachers was compelled to spend a lunxhtime with MRG eulogising about how awesome he is!

Amazing events including live feed for St Cecilia's

Wow! It is going to be  an amazing few days for the men of Talbot's; busy, but amazing!

Today is going to be manic with the following things happening: Curtis is singing in the lunchtime concert and then Arthur, Lennart, Dan and Luca have their GCSE Drama devised pieces. In the evening there is the Gilbert Lloyd Art lecture at the same time as the amazingly brilliant St Cecilia's concert. The live stream video is below where you will be able to see Jason, Adrian, Stephen, Alex.S, Ben.W and Alvin in action.

Tomorrow the whole Rugby Club is heading to Allianz park to watch the 1st XV, including George and Kighty, play in the champions trophy national final. Of course, Saturday then also sees fixture for 5 teams in the seniors and four teams in each of the junior age groups too (team news on Friday night), so all boys should be busy and active in a number of ways.

This is just a normal week in the life of a man of Talbot's of course but it is a great snapshot, we think, of all the opportunities available to them.

Friday Celebration 25/11/16

Its been a week of much success; of course, we are Talbot's!

Ben.W was awarded a place in the national youth choir which is a huge achievement, especially when put in the context of his not quite making it in last week. The Mo Bros, Ben, Duncan and Harun have been to the fore in teaching lessons and running activities this week. one of these was the Tug of war where the 12 man St Peter's team contained 11 mean of Talbot's and could have had 13 or 14 given how many volunteered. its probably bets we don;t mention the results but it was a great effort. The two Alex's K and S played wonderfully in the lunchtime concert on Wednesday. Harun has also been in the Drama society production of Macbeth. This week also saw the first ever Chinese society hosted at the house by Matthew and his team, it was great to see it getting going.

In sports, Henry will play for the U14B vs NSB.
In the U15 Andrew plays for the A team and Dan for the Bs
In the seniors, Sewy returns to the starting lineup for the XV after his barnstormer against Epsom and Kighty remains on the wing. Sports will play for the 4ths and in our beloved 5th XV Leo, Frank, Matthew, Anthony and John will play.

Karting Trip 2016

We had a great time karting last week in Milton Keynes. The boys raced in groups of 6-8 and in between had the chance to relax, play some Mario kart, cheer on the other racers and indulge in some hot pizza if they wanted. As ever, they all had a great time and it is after events such as these that the boys feel more part of the house and both deepen and grow new friendships.
It was, of course, a competitive event and the most important thing to know is that Mr Gracie came 4th!
He was unfortunately just pipped by George (3rd), Leo (2nd) and Niklas who won in one of the week's fastest times at the venue! The boys were a credit to the house and it was a trip appreciated all round!

Movember 2016

Fresh faced boys on day one
It's that time of year again where several of our boys start growing some interesting facial hair and the head master lets the rules on shaving relax for just four weeks in aid of 'Movember'. This year we have Mo Bro's Harun, Ben and Duncan representing the house in the School team.

Movember is a charity dedicated to preventing early death in men and in the 13 years it's been running they have funded more than 1,200 male health projects helping to tackle issues like prostate and testicular cancers, mental health issues and suicide. They project that by 2030 they will have reduced the number of men dying prematurely by an incredible  25%!!

Welcome back from a special guest!

It is always so exciting (We know that's a bit sad!) to welcome everyone back after a holiday!

There is a sense of anticipation about what is to come and a feeling of accomplishment from what went previously. This is no exception and it was particularly amazing to reflect in tonight's welcome back meeting about some of last term's achievements. we focused on the fact that three new societies have been started up at school as a result of involvement of men of Talbot's and then took a show of hands to see who had gone to support someone else from the house in an event, made a school debut in sports or been nominated for a Friday celebration prize. There were, of course, many hands and that is the secret to our growing greatness we feel, everyone in Talbot's plays their part, we have no spare wheels!

The welcome back meeting had a special twist as we had a surprise  guest to deliver our inspiration slot. Charlie Clare is a professional Rugby player with the Northampton saints who knew Mr Gracie in his previous life as a boarder in the northwest. Charlie was great at sharing honestly about his experiences, both positive and negative, as a both a schoolboy with lofty ambitions and a professional sportsman. It was also really interesting to hear him talk about why he did a degree whilst playing and what he felt it takes to reach the top in any given field. He then stayed around for nearly an hour to talk to some of the boys and give some advice which was hugely appreciated.

Charlie also fulfilled his role for the inspiration slot and left us with not just an inspirational quote, but a whole passage which is copied below. It was great to hear about how the passage (which his dad gave him as a present when he was struggling) had helped him during a difficult time at boarding school and a great quote to get us fired up for the next half of term!

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

Friday Night Celebration 8/10/16

Another big celebration last night with two Kings of Merit. Both Divine and Jason got an incredible eight merits each. The competition was fierce this week with nearly 60% of the house receiving at least one merit, but these guys were way ahead of the pack with Tizian in 3rd place a three whole merits behind them. You can see the whole merit table at the bottom of this post.

It was also a great week for George as he broke a couple of school records, but he's taking it all in his stride now. He is also going to be debuting in the starting line up for the 1st XV rugby squad this weekend alongside Kighty, and in the 5th team we have Leo, John, Frank, Anthony and Matthew representing the house.

In the under 15's squads we have Andrew playing for the A team, Reidy in the B's, and Ruslan and Alikhan Y have both been promoted this week to the Cs. Henry T is going to be playing under 14Bs and Divine will be representing in the fourth form C team.

Along with all this rugby, we also have Lennart rowing and Adrian and JLo in the Badminton second team.

Earlier in the week, we had our singing practice in the great hall in preparation for house singing next Thursday. Everyone is starting to enjoy the nervous excitement that comes at this time of year as we build up to the big competition and we are looking forward to welcoming those of you who can make it to the house. We had a great evening celebrating the upper sixth this week, in particular our three boys who turned 18, sharing cakes, encouraging one another and learning how to open a bottle of champagne.

Friday Night Celebration 30/09/16

We've had another great week in the house, with loads to celebrate, but special mention this week goes to Jason, Charles, Curtis, Dan, Arthur and Joseph for their incredible resilience. Each of these boys has faced difficult challenges this week, and each of them has come out of it stronger.

Speaking of challenges, we have several boys debuting in rugby matches for the school this week, so good luck to Niklas and Luca in the under 16C team, Aaron in the under 15 Ds and Joseph in the under 14 Es.

Other boys also playing are Kighty and Seward in the 1st XV, Sporton in the 4th and Szeto, John, Leo and Frank in the 5ths. Dan S is playing in the Under 16 C's. Andrew is playing in the 15A's, Reidy in the 15Bs, Brady in 15Cs and, Ruslan and Alikhan are in the 15D team. Henry will be representing the under 14 B's and I'm sure there will be many boys out supporting them.

In the Merit competition this week, King of Merits was Tizian with an incredible 14 merits(!) closely followed by Jason with 11 and Charles with 8.

Florider trip 2016

Tonight we had our first whole house outing this year to the florider complex at twinwoods, near Bedford. The boys got to choose their activities from the surf simulator (the florider), climbing, a racing simulator and shooting/archery. This meant everyone got to do activities they were keen on or could chill out in the cafe if they preferred. As ever, the atmosphere in the house feels a lot tighter from having spent a fun evening together and more barriers were broken down and friendships made.

Bowling Trip

We had a great evening last night joining up with St Peter's Day House for a bowling trip with the fourths and removes. Lots of fun, lots of food and a great chance to get to know one another a little bit better.

Ickwell Day

On Sunday we had our annual trip to Ickwell with the boys and as promised, here are the photos. As usual, the day started out with some football games:

 



















A couple of the boys got into some shelter building.


Ruslan won the steak cooking competition, but was closely rivalled by Tizian and Arthur. 







Some of the boys prefer chess, and card games. 




Whilst others got creative with carving and building a swing, and general weaponry.













Obviously, we roasted marshmallows too.
