First Baking Club of Term
Last Saturday in the boarding house the baking club made flapjacks, but these
flapjacks where much different from ordinary ones as firstly they were made by
men of Talbot's and secondly they were covered in melted chocolate and
marshmallows. This meant for an awesome supper on Saturday night which the house
enjoyed a lot.

Fives vs RFA
After a long winter break, the Talbot's fives players were ready and rearing to go upon their return to school. Karan is this year's fives first team captain and was keen to select fives players he knows well, with two Talbot's boys selected alongside him in the Fives 1st IV, Dom and Michael. Dom has played before for the fives team, however Michael was making his debut for the outfit. After arriving early to get some practice in, the boys were met with closed doors to the courts, which they presumed meant that the courts were locked. However, Mr Croker had in fact left the doors open, and to the boys horror, after twenty minutes of waiting, the boys discovered this for themselves. Nonetheless, the boys cracked on with some practice, until the opposition arrived. The RFA are a gentlemen's side, therefore the boys certainly were superior in terms of athleticism, however the gentlemen's experience and guile proved too much for Michael and Karan in the singles, however our resident power-lifter, Dom, made short work of his opponent, with some brute strength coupled with moments of creative brilliance dismantling his opponents spirited resistance. After the conclusion of the singles matches, with the RFA holding a slight advantage, the match moved on to the doubles. Karan and Michael made up a pair, with Dom making a pair with Yuri Lelikov of Redburn House. Karan and Michael's matches began brightly, with a win against their opposite numbers. However, despite some outrageous shots from Karan and Michael's best efforts to cover Karan, the pair lost their remaining matches. Yuri and Dom, although being far superior in terms of strength than their opposition, could not convert this into points and eventually succumbed to some close defeats. Eventually, the RFA won by about 40 points, a respectable result and one that was a fair representation of the fixture. The boys certainly saw some positives in their matches, however, and will look to improve for their upcoming fixtures.

Excellent Hockey Win
Ben and Tom were involved in a fine win for the 1st XI last weekend. The match report from the school website is below, with a link to the article. Suffice to say, we are very proud to have the scorers of 3 of the 4 goals in our house!
Hockey Win over Trent
The 1st XI secured a fine win at home against Trent College on Saturday 11th January 2014.
Bedford dominated the game from the outset, and a well worked penalty corner from Benedict Nesseler gave Bedford an early lead. However, two lapses in concentration enabled Trent to score twice, very much against the run of play. Nonetheless, Bedford continued to dominate the remainder of the first half. Whilst an equalising goal did not materialise, Robb Wright visibly started to grow into his new role in centre midfield.
The message at half time was one of belief, and it was pleasing to see the boys starting to believe in themselves and each other despite the fact they were trailing. One or two slight adjustments in the formation brought about controlled possession. With Nesseler, Tristan Elhert and Grant Lawrence in full control at the back, the lads ahead had the chance to go and play Hockey. Nesseler converted another corner, to bring the score to 2-2. Although almost instantly Trent's stand out player scored a goal worthy of winning any game! In previous seasons this might have killed off the game, but I had a feeling the lads weren't done yet. Tom Crowson's quick hands created a chance to finish in style and to tie the game. Not happy with the draw, Bedford pushed forward again and this time Ben Spencer finished on his back hand after a flowing move to score the winning goal.

Well, no week in Talbot's would be complete without our Friday Celebration. Though we have only been back 4 days, there is already much to be proud of. The standard celebration hot supper also made a welcome return of course!
The 5th form and IB2 boys have of course been focusing on their trial exams and have been matched in endeavour by this week's merit winner: Jun who was chased by Alastair and Maxim. Jack has also found himself joining our elite group of boys in the Business Studies and Economics Champions League places.
Karan has had a busy week preparing for upcoming University interviews, but also discovered that he passed grade 8 on the guitar with a very high merit score, a wonderful achievement.
Special mention was made for Will.R who has been staying with us for a week and thrown himself into Talbot's life, including covering an evening prep supervision even though he is a day boy!
The best room of the week went to Room 14, well done Ben, Nihat and Simon.
On the sports front, it was a special week for Simon who made his debut for the school in being picked for the U15B football team. Most humorously, Kritt was also picked but had already swapped sports, thus leaving him waiting for his debut. Simon was joined in the U15B by Bob whilst Nihat was selected for the U15A. In the seniors, Justus is in the 4ths, Rufus and Leo in the 3rds, Aaron and Rio in the 2nds and Nico starts his Bedford School AFC career in the 1st XI!
In Hockey Ben.N and Tom are picked for the 1st XI again, after the narrow loss in the week and Jack and Dylan are in the 3rds. In the under 16s, Josh is in the A squad, bringing his notoriously physical style, whilst Ben.K is in the U15 A team. In the U14s, Teepee and Frank are in the D squad.
In Fives, we have 3 of the first 4 in Karan, Dom.B and debutant Michael.
For the main awards: Alastair is top bloke as he has brought one of his self portraits in as a gift to the house, whilst Dylan is man of the Week for being chief photographer at last term's Christmas dinner and then bringing all the pictures to school for the house photo reel.
